It was written, in 1969, about a woman, Barbara “Bobby” McKee, who worked as a secretary in songwriter Fred Foster’s building. Many people have assumed Kristofferson wrote the song for Joplin, but that’s not the case: he didn’t know she was recording it at all. Just blew me away.” Above, you can hear a rare recording, possibly the first take, and possibly one of the early versions Kristofferson heard in the studio. He met the producer of Joplin’s last album, Pearl, in L.A., who told him to come to the studio “to play me her recording of ‘Bobby McGee.’ And it just blew me away. “She was so important to me in my life and she lived for such a short time,” she adds, “but yet has had a legacy that has brought me into her life in a way that I never would have connected with if she had continued being able to speak for herself.“You can’t think of that song without thinking of Janis,” says Kris Kristofferson of Janis Joplin’s raw, bittersweet, posthumously released “ Me and Bobby McGee.” Kristofferson, who wrote the song, only heard Joplin’s version after her death, when he returned to California after playing the Isle of Wight in 1970. She taught me about a world beyond my personal experience because she brought it home.” “I’d sneak books off her shelf that my parents wouldn’t let me read. For Laura, the scrapbook offers a chance to revisit her sister’s memories. “She was six years older than me and was light years ahead in terms of her artistic ability and her curiosity,” she says. It’s sold as a collectors edition as well as deluxe, with the latter including a portrait of Joplin autographed by Slick. Janis Joplin: Days & Summers is hand-stamped by the estate and limited to 2,000 copies. I think that Janis’s feminine energy and excitement created an identity.”Ĭlippings also feature Joplin’s tours and travels, including her performance at Woodstock in 1969, photos from one of her several appearances on The Dick Cavett Show, and an envelope she mailed to her father while staying at the infamous Hotel Chelsea in New York City. “It launched her career in that sense in terms of her musical performance. “Monterey Pop was her primary introduction to the world,” Laura says. Vibrant photographs and posters show the psychedelic San Francisco scene with the Grateful Dead, while several spreads are devoted to Joplin’s breakthrough performance at Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. Later pages examine Joplin’s rise to fame, from playing gigs in coffee houses to joining Big Brother and the Holding Company. “It gives you a way to focus on the smaller moments in a person’s life, and so much of who a person is comes from those moments.” “It came together through the curiosity and desire of Janis,” Laura says. The scrapbook is exactly how Joplin kept it no editing was involved. She was visually an expressive person as well as a singer.” “We learned about our own life in keeping a scrapbook, in our awareness that the page was an expression and how we we used it. “Our mother was into photo albums and shared a lot of the family,” Joplin’s younger sister Laura tells Rolling Stone. The pages show class photographs, programs of plays, valentines, ribbons, and other memorabilia. Joplin’s early years in Port Arthur, Texas, are also featured she began scrapbooking while at Thomas Jefferson High School in the late Fifties. It features annotations from Joplin herself - as well as her family and friends - with an introduction by Grace Slick. The scrapbook contains rare photographs, unpublished letters, newspaper clips, souvenirs, and more, documenting her career from 1966 through 1968. And, on June 10th, fans can take a deep dive into her personal archives with the scrapbook Janis Joplin: Days & Summers. Her estate kicked off this year with a 50th-anniversary edition of Pearl, while a children’s book featuring the icon teaching nouns arrives this spring. More than half a century after her death, Janis Joplin’s legacy continues to loom large.

(The brackets around 'by the doctor' show that this part of the sentence is optional it can be omitted.) For example, 'The doctor treated the patient' becomes 'The patient was treated '. When a verb has only a direct object, the direct object becomes the subject of the passive verb. the direct object is 'your letter of discharge'.In 'Has the doctor given you your letter of discharge?': The first thing I'd suggest is clearly distinguishing the direct object and the indirect object. Yes, using the passive voice with double object verbs (like 'give') can be a little tricky. If that's the case, then key elements of the active sentence wouldn't make it into the passive version in real usage. One of the main reasons is for leaving out information. When exercises that involve transforming actives into passives are created, it's easy to lose sight of the fact that passives are used for very specific reasons. Though really in that case, I'd probably just leave out 'from a weapons manufacturer'. For example, if what's important is that he received payments (and not that they came from a weapons manufacturer), then the second one might be better. If I were writing a text that needed to include one or the other of these sentences, I'd choose the first one unless there were some good reason not to. Even if it were, in almost any situation, clearer sentences beat sentences that are ostensibly more grammatical, at least in my book. In other words, I don't think it's an adverbial here. I'm not completely sure, but I'd probably call 'from a weapons manufacturer' a prepositional phrase that modifies 'Payments' (the head of the noun phrase) and therefore sits under it. I agree that the first sentence is much easier to understand. I glared at her and shouted a sock-gagged version of “disgusting”. Before she even put on her seatbelt, Brittany turned her whole body to look at me and with a big smile asked, “So how does my sock taste?” After a couple minutes, I realized I was stuck and just laid there in defeat, trying to avoid touching the sock with my tongue while the girls enjoyed their smoke.Īfter about 7 or 8 minutes, the girls had finished and got in the car – Sam was driving, Brittany in the passenger seat. But the tape had not only been wrapped several times, but also up and down my wrists, keeping them tightly together and unable to move hardly at all. I fought against the tape, trying desperately to break (or at least loosen) the wrap around my wrists. I tried shouting at them, but they either didn’t hear me or didn’t care. The girls stood right next to the window my head was near and each lit a cigarette. “Don’t go anywhere” Sam said with a laugh as she closed the door. I struggled more feverishly (although, you probably couldn’t tell) as Sam and Brittany worked on fitting me the rest of the way into the car – pushing on my legs and pulling on my shoulders. I moaned in disgust while the girls laughed. I tried to push the sock through the tape, but the tape held strong. I could tell it was sweaty by the salty taste overwhelming my tongue. You can enjoy that for awhile.” Brittany said as she smoothed the tape over my mouth with both hands. Within only a second or two Brittany had used finger to work the sock all the way into my mouth, picked up the strip of tape and slapped it over my mouth. I tried to turn my head to see what she was doing, but before I even turned it too much I saw a dirty white sock (with pink on the toes/heel) presented in front of my face and quickly forced into my mouth. Then I felt her – still on my back – shuffling around. She ripped it off and set it on the seat, next to my head. “BUT,” Sam interrupted, “we are obviously going to have to do something about your mouth because I am SO not listening to you complain the entire way home”.īrittany began pulling a large piece of tape off the roll. We’ll take you back to my place, probably laugh at you for a bit, then we’ll let you go” “Oh, you’ll be fine” Sam reassured me “you’re just being a baby. “I thought we were kidding!” I shouted as I struggled – in vain – against the tape. “I told you we were going to kidnap you!” Sam said “You even SAID we could!” “You bitches better let me go right now!” Once my ankles and knees were taped together, Brittany finally let go of my mouth. Once my hands weren’t an issue, she began taping the ankles of my kicking legs – Brittany still keeping a firm hold on my mouth. Sam grabbed a new roll of duct tape from the floor of her car and started to wrap it GENEROUSLY around my wrists. I started yelling at them to let go, but Brittany – who was virtually kneeling on top of my back - clamped her hand over my mouth, silencing me quite effectively. They managed to push me most of the way into the backseat with me laying on my stomach. I began to legitimately struggle, but between them having the drop on me, and me being in an awkward bent-over position (as they forced me head-first into the car), I couldn’t really fight them both. Brittany opened the back door of the car, then assisted Sam with pulling me in. Sam then grabbed my arm and pulled me toward her car, pushing me into it. I just laughed a little and said “Heh, Ok Sam” “Well,” said Sam, “we decided we’re going to kidnap you” I walked over to her and Brittany and asked what was up. We laughed, and went back-and-forth some more.Ī few days later, we were heading to our cars after our shift that ended at 2:00pm. I joked that they’re welcome to kidnap me whenever. Diddyĭiddy is DK's classic wee pal, and in Tropical Freeze he has a rocket barrel backpack to help DK on his platforming adventure. The whole game is completable with DK alone, all jumps and platforming challenges are balanced to allow for his more limited mobility, and taking him through the game will be a steep challenge. It's not bad, but the other Kongs can do everything DK can, and more? And if you don't know him? Well, get to know.ĭonkey Kong is the main character, and he also happens to be possibly the least useful? I mean, he has the basic moveset, and nothing else. Some secrets will be hiding in sacks, or behind doors that require having something thrown at them. You can grab barrels or certain toppled enemies, and release the trigger to throw it. Shaped almost like a golden plug, the Kong family can pull at them to uncover bananas, items or even new paths forward. This one only works on special handles that you'll see in the ground. Not so good for attacking, but great to open up new paths and find hidden treasures. Press one of the attack buttons while standing still, and DK and pals will slam and slap on the ground, which will burst any nearby containers, or even open up secret trap doors that you might be standing on. Rolling is a fast way to move, and jumping in a roll will throw you across the screen as you carry all of the momentum into the air. The roll's most useful function might not actually be its offensive properties, but instead the mobility it gives you. Well, as long as you don't run into any traps, more dangerous enemies, or spikes. Going solo, DK can only roll a short distance, but with a pal on his back DK can roll infinitely. Keep in mind that, quite like Mario, hitting and holding jump just before landing on an enemy will make you bounce higher. Keep this is mind for those more difficult leaps of faith. You can often jump slightly late, like as you're reaching or just going off the edge of a platform, even in a mine cart, you'll find you can essentially jump in the air, just a little bit. With Diddy, Dixie or Cranky on his back, DK can gain a double jump that'll make it much easier to reach new platforms. Well, this is a platformer after all, so I guess we'll start with the most basic of basic moves. Not to worry though, with our breakdown of all the moves and characters in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, you'll be fully prepared to overcome every platforming challenge. After all, it's a difficult game that will demand some strict skills. If you've picked up Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze but you've never experienced the hardcore platforming action before then you might feel a little bit out of your depth. The big strong ape with his hairy arms is hard not to love, and as for the rest of his questionable family tree, well, they're cool too, I guess. Whether you're a great ape or a primitive primate it's hard to deny the allure of Donkey Kong. Held traditionally since the early 1800s, coinciding with the ‘Golden Week’ holidays of Greenery Day and Children’s Day, the festival pits Zama and Sagamihara cities against each other as each team tries to hoist their massive kite into the air for the longest possible time. The author/artist’s two-page ending note contains information about historic kite flying in China and elsewhere, and kites everywhere today.A large kite, supported by over 50 members of a local Zama City fire department, takes flight during the Sagamihara ‘Giant Kite festival’ May 4th, 2023. The young narrator adds dragon eyes, and everyone works to attach a noisemaker. Little Mei-Mei uses preschooler’s scissors to do some cutting. “Ma- Ma joins sticks together.” An older child and her father glue paper and paint. It is a good day for kites.” And so a family of Asian heritage gets busy making a kite. Endpapers feature illustrations of the materials needed for building a kite and the symbolic meaning of some kite shapes. An author’s note following the text summarizes the history and significance of kite-flying in the Chinese culture. The bold artwork and simple text with the obvious accompanying activity will interest young readers as they are introduced to this wonderful Chinese tradition. Painted illustrations that seem to be cut from brightly colored origami paper fill each page. Heading out to a windy field, they send the dragon into the air, watching as it dances across the sky, joining dozens of other kites in flight. Finally the family attaches a noisemaker and some string. Ba-Ba glues the paper.” The children take turns cutting the whiskers, painting a mouth, and adding colorful eyes. Beginning from raw materials, each member takes part in the creation of the flying paper dragon. There are added notes on kite-flying in history and today.Ī windy day offers the family from Dim Sum for Everyone! (2002) the perfect opportunity to build and fly a kite. Beginning with the title page, the double pages show the family in action in a flat, decorative style that emphasizes the patterns on the clothes, wall paper, and kite, designed to show the unity of the family as they work together. The front end-papers depict the materials used, while the back papers present ten very attractive animal-shaped kites. They paint and decorate it, then take it out to talk to the wind. What do you think he’s saying?” Two pages of endnotes provide historical and cultural context for this favorite pastime, and clever endpapers display craft supplies and kite shapes.Ī young girl describes very simply, in just a few words, how her family builds a dragon kite together. The close-up perspective will draw little ones right into the project the finished dragon kite flies as if “talking to the wind. The overall simplicity is effective and appealing, and the spare text is accentuated by bright gouache illustrations, in colorful shapes and painted fabric patterns that call up the same strong style Lin used in Dim Sum for Everyone! (2001). Even the girl’s two younger sisters help: Mei Mei cuts the whiskers and Jie Jie paints a laughing mouth. Demi’s Kites: Magic Wishes That Fly up to the Sky (Knopf, 2000) provides even more information about Chinese kites and their meanings.Ī Chinese girl describes how the members of her family come together to make and fly a dragon kite. An author’s note offers a brief history of kite flying. Front endpapers contain supplies needed to build a kite while the back pages depict different kite creatures and the attributes they symbolize. Lin’s signature swirls in the sky along with diagonals of kite string, grassy hill, and kite ribbons and blowing hair, clothing, and leaves combine to suggest the ideal blustery day for this activity. More patterns appear on Chinese-style jackets and slippers and on the bright-red dragon as well. Patterns in the wallpaper and floor that form the background for the brilliantly colored, flat paintings of family members add visual interest. The brief sentence on every spread describes what each family member is doing: “Ba-Ba glues the paper.” “Mei-Mei cuts whiskers.” Young Mei-Mei’s protruding tongue is evidence of her complete absorption in and enjoyment of her task. PreSchool-Grade 3-The parents and three daughters who were introduced in Dim Sum for Everyone! (Knopf, 2001) return this time to shop for supplies and make a dragon kite, which they fly on a windy day. YSP Nystatin Capsule 500,000 Units (Y.S.P Industries Sdn. When searching for a way to defamiliarize a familiar film, I was immediately draw to the concept of translation and how one’s understanding – or lack of understanding – of a particular language affects the viewing experience. Jeunet and Laurant did not write the screenplay anticipating that their words would eventually be translated into English – and that certain aspects of their original vision would be lost in the process of translation. But they are not an original part of the film. For me, as a monolingual English-speaker, the subtitles are an integral part of the film. The presence of subtitles in Amelie is something I absolutely have taken for granted. These subtitles are, of course, there to help the non-French speaking viewer understand the film and follow its plot. Like most foreign-language films released to primarily English-speaking audiences, Amelie is accompanied by English subtitles that correspond to the French dialogue. Oh yeah, and it’s a film with dialogue that’s completely spoken in French. It’s a film I’ve seen more times than I can count, and it’s a film that speaks to my world view possibly more than any other piece of media. It’s a love story, a coming of age story, and a ghost story all at once. Released in 2001, it tells the story of Amelie Poulain, an ordinary young woman and the extraordinary ways she interacts with her world. For someone so obsessed with words, it may come as a surprise that my favourite film is in a language that I barely understand.Īmelie is the esoteric and Technicolor love child of director Jean-Pierre Jeunet and screenwriter Guillaume Laurant.
